On what a gift card must never be used to pay for, the page lists: "Repayment of public or private debts"; "Bills (utilities, debt collections, hospital bills, etc.)"; "Tech or IT support services"; "Products from other retailers"; "Government agency fees (taxes, immigration, etc.)"; "Judicial services (bail, court judgments, etc.)"; "Financial penalties or fines".
On where a card can be bought: "lululemon can't support you if you purchase a gift card from any third-party retailer (authorized or unauthorized). Please connect with the retailer that the card was purchased from if you experience an issue."
On who holds the risk: "Remember: lululemon doesn't protect your gift card balance. You're responsible for keeping your gift card information secure. Never share your gift card number or PIN with anyone."

If it doesn't work
Start with the failure mode, because the official answers differ. PIN scratched, in the official words: "If you’ve accidentally scratched your gift card PIN, the gift card can still be used in store to make a purchase.
